From Idols to Christ: The Transformation of Ekabanye

In the town of Bole, located in Ghana’s Savannah Region, a remarkable transformation took place. Obed Iddrisu, COF missionary at the Sawla Centre, welcomed Ekabanye—a 33-year-old father of three—as the newest member of the Bole Church.

For years, Ekabanye had been a source of deep pain for his family. While his mother, Cynthia, and his siblings were devoted members of the Bole Church, Ekabanye actively persecuted them. He frequently attempted to block his mother from attending services, urging her to abandon her faith and return to idol worship.

As a leader of a local occult group, Ekabanye’s life was defined by more than just traditional idols; he was also caught in a cycle of drug abuse and theft. However, the trajectory of his life changed through an unexpected encounter with the Audio Bible in his native Dagaare language.

The device originally belonged to his maternal grandfather, who encouraged Ekabanye to listen. As the Word of God played in his own tongue, Ekabanye felt the power of God touch his heart. Convicted by his lifestyle, he approached Obed and his team, seeking a way out of his “evil ways.” After being introduced to Christ, he surrendered his life to the Lord.

The Turning Point to solidify his new walk with Christ, Ekabanye voluntarily surrendered his idols—both those he had inherited from his uncle and those he had acquired himself. After a time of prayer, Obed and his team helped him burn the objects, marking a clean break from his past.

By the grace of God, Ekabanye is now a changed man and an active member of the Bole Church. He has walked away from the occult and abandoned his former vices. To support his growth, the mission team continue to visit him frequently for prayer and discipleship. He continued to rely on his audio Bible—his “invisible pastor”—to stay rooted in the Word.knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
