From the bar to the Bible: a beacon of hope in Gbongborduori

Martin, a dedicated COF Missionary, recently visited the village of Gbongborduori equipped with audio Bibles and a passion for outreach. It was there he encountered 47-year-old Peter, a man whose life was being consumed by a severe struggle with alcohol addiction.

The two met at a local bar where Peter was drinking heavily. Led by the Holy Spirit, Martin approached him, shared the Word of God, and offered a prayer. The following day, Martin returned to gift Peter an audio Bible in his native language, Dagaare, encouraging him to meditate on the scriptures.

Following that encounter, Peter experienced a powerful dream in which he was divinely warned to leave his old life behind. Gripped by a newfound reverence for God, Peter made the immediate decision to stop drinking. During a follow-up visit, he shared his testimony with Martin and requested prayers for his entire household—even calling his children from outside the community to join in. That day, Peter officially surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.

Peter’s radical transformation resonated throughout the village, drawing many others to the faith. Fueled by his growing passion, Peter began a fellowship in Gbongborduori. Martin eventually helped formalize this gathering into a church plant, which was handed over to the Assemblies of God. Today, the very man once found in the local bar serves as the church’s appointed overseer.
